Keeping busy

I have worked at Shipleys for almost 3 years and my role is now that of a Senior. As well as accounts preparations for limited companies and partnerships, work involves on-site audits for the film and TV industry, to funds and pensions, to charities and schools, along with PLCs for clients in London and the width and breadth of the UK. That said, I am off in the next week, to Potsdam, the capital and largest city of the German Federal State of Brandenburg.  Whilst I’ll be very busy, a chance to utilise my rusty German A Level knowledge and of course, a trip to the famous German Christmas markets has to be taken!  That’s the thing with Shipleys, opportunities to experience new places, meet new people and work on different projects are aplenty.

The experiences I’ve gained in working at this medium firm are numerous. Recently I was asked to participate with Peter Ellis, Shipleys’ Training Manager, in the SWAT Graduate Fair, a day dedicated to promoting the benefits of combining studying for the ACA qualification with the advantages of working at Shipleys to potential students and graduates. It was easy to endorse the benefits of working at Shipleys from my own experience; support to study, in-house mentoring and the camaraderie from attending the regular socials that have so far included a sports day, treasure hunt, karaoke, quiz night and casino night! What more could a trainee wish for!

First impressions of Shipleys

The idea of changing practices midway during my ACA qualification was originally quite daunting to me: new team, new systems and even new day to day work because I was moving from 100% Audit work to providing a split of Audit and Accounts work at Shipleys. However, from the inception of the recruitment process to my present day at Shipleys I can see there really was nothing to worry about: From day 1 the HR team made the transition into my new role a relaxing but above all extremely welcoming one and this has only been enhanced further by every member of staff I’ve met so far in each department; everyone is incredibly supportive, friendly and a pleasure to work with.

My first week involved inductions and some excellent training on company software by more experienced employees in both the London and Godalming office which set me up nicely as it gave me the chance to familiarise myself with Shipley’s systems and processes ahead of taking on any client work.

My day to day job involves working on an array of Audit and Account prep clients from a variety of industries, so no two days are the same or repetitive which makes for an engaging and interesting work week!

There are of course days when I feel I don’t understand certain tasks but I’ve quickly learnt that this is nothing to worry about because absolutely everyone is so approachable: there is always someone I can ask who is happy to lend an helping hand.

Moving to Shipleys LLP has been a great decision and I look really forward to progressing with my Accountancy career here!
